General Information

The award identifies and rewards outstanding examples of sustainable design in order to motivate the relevant actors to more sustainable commitment and to provide consumers orientation in their choice of products.

The award is sponsored by the Stiftung Deutscher Nachhaltigkeitspreis e.V. (National German Sustainability Award Foundation) in cooperation with the German federal government, municipal umbrella organisations, business associations, civil society organisations and research institutions.

All nominees and finalists will be published and will receive communication tools to publicize their success. They are intensively included in the reporting of the German Sustainability Award Foundation and its cooperation and media partners. The winners in particular are usually widely reported in the media. A ranking will not be published.

The finalists will each receive two free tickets for the awards ceremony on 3 December and for the congress/the German Sustainability Day on 3 and 4 December 2020 at the MARITIM Hotel Düsseldorf (Maritim-Platz 1, 40468 Düsseldorf).

The winners will receive an award ("prize globe" made of aluminium, symbolizing the logo of the German Sustainability Award) during the award ceremony on December 3, 2020. The remaining finalists will receive a plexiglass statuette.

The licensing of a seal is optional. With the GSA Design seal, successful participants in the competition can document the sustainability of their products/services/systems - towards customers, suppliers, media and the financial world. The GSA seal is a prestigious external recognition, makes the pioneers recognisable and ensures a lead in the market. The GSA Design seal will make it easier for consumers to choose products and give them orientation in their search for sustainable alternatives.

By design we do not only refer to the design of physical products, but also to the development of any conceivable product, system or service. At best, development begins with the question of how the result can achieve the greatest possible positive effect for sustainability, with the design and implementation of the design solution being guided by this. For this purpose, the GSA Design aims to motivate and provide tailwind for the success of good examples.

Application

Companies of all sizes, established designers within and outside agencies and aspiring designers, students and startups are eligible to participate. The solutions must be available on the German market and the concepts/visions must be intended for market launch in Germany.

Time for applications 2020 is over.

Applicants present their product/service/system via an online tool by answering key questions on the transformation contribution of their solution and submitting a poster as well as a short film and, if applicable, digital additional material.

Physical submissions will not be accepted. It would be contrary to the principle of sustainable organizations if the award were to result in avoidable packaging, storage, transport and presentation expenses.

This year's application phase is closed. The application period is expected to start again in spring 2021. If you are interested and would like to be informed early, please subscribe to our newsletter.

The GSA Design is not structured into product lines or market segments. It is looking for transformative design in the areas of construction and furnishing, food and agriculture, packaging, clothing and accessories, health and care, work and office, mobility and transport, communication, information and education, leisure and tourism.

The following can be submitted

- established icons,

- current pioneers and

- Visions of the future.

"Icons" are understood as products, services and systems that have been on the market for more than five years and are pioneering in terms of sustainability. They embody values such as durability, timelessness, innovation (in their time), design quality, attitude and responsibility. Established design icons may fascinate for decades, inspire entire industries and perhaps even stand for forgotten materials or production processes that are now worth remembering.

"Current pioneers" are products, services and systems launched on the market in the last five years that were (also) designed with sustainability in mind and that make transformation an exemplary reality.

"Future visions" are revolutionary ideas and concepts for transformative products/services/systems that have not yet been realized.

The basic methodological approach is the same for icons, pioneers and future visions. The application document for the presentation of an icon is slightly different from the other two submission forms.

Regardless of the chance of being awarded, every participation in the German Sustainability Award leads to an intensive examination of the own sustainability performance.

Participants in the competition will receive two free tickets (limited ticket contingent) for the awards ceremony of the German Sustainability Award Design on 3 December 2020 at the MARITIM Hotel Düsseldorf (Maritim-Platz 1, 40468 Düsseldorf) and thus access to Germany's largest sustainability network.
