The City of Solingen with the City of Thiès (Senegal)

The long-standing and complex relationship between Solingen, also known as the “City of Blades” and the Senegalese town of Thiès evolved into an official town twinning in 2016. To implement Agenda 2030, multi-stakeholder projects focus on the restoration and stabilization of Thiès' ecosystems. Numerous measures, such as the construction of dams and ditches

or the planting of trees, are intended to protect Thiès and its surroundings from the threats of flooding and soil erosion. The installation of environment-friendly heating stoves in private households is also intended to address climate change. As a Global Sustainable Municipality, Solingen is committed to promoting indirect measures such as fair trade in German shops despite its limited funds.

On 14 November 2018, the jury of the German Sustainability Award will select the top 3 entries and the winner.
