The list of nominees for the International German Sustainability Award includes seven collaborations between a company based in Germany and a partner in the Global South. These corporate partnerships were able to assert themselves among all participants and convinced the assessment partners.
In close cooperation with its partner RecyCoal Rwanda Ltd., RecyCoal GmbH implements innovative projects for the production and use of biochar from unused biomass. This technology enables the long-term binding of CO2 in the soil, generating certified carbon removal certificates. At the same time, biochar improves soil structure, increases water and nutrient storage capacity and strengthens resilience to climatic challenges such as droughts.
BlackForest Solutions GmbH (BFS) advises on the circular economy in the Global South, including the planning of waste management plans and recycling facilities. In 2021, BFS members founded the ReverseLab in a favela in Rio to create decentralized plastic recycling hubs. The first ReverseLab employs 5 people, awards grants and receives orders from international companies. BFS and Reverse aim to build waste infrastructure in favelas and similar communities worldwide and create sustainable jobs.
Since 2009, Dr. Bronner's (DRB) and Serendipalm Co. Ltd (SPCL) have been operating the first organic and fair trade certified palm oil project in Asuom, Ghana. Palm oil has a bad reputation as it is often grown in monocultures on cleared jungle land, destroying habitats, and processed under exploitative conditions. However, DRB shows that it is the “how” that counts: by working with small farmers and SPCL, palm oil can become a solution to social and environmental problems such as climate change.
Water operator partnership Hamburg-Bremen-Jordan
The partnership is an operator partnership or Water Operators Partnerships (WOPs). WOPs are partnerships between public water and wastewater utilities in the Global North and the Global South. These partnerships support SDG 6 and other sustainable development goals as they provide essential services. In water-scarce countries such as Jordan, strong water companies are crucial to tackle challenges such as climate change and improve water supply and sanitation.
The partnership between Midsona Deutschland GmbH and Ibis Rice Conservation promotes a sustainable rice value chain and combines rice cultivation with nature conservation. Small farmers commit to organic farming, avoid deforestation and protect endangered species such as the giant ibis. They receive a purchase guarantee of 50% above the market price. This protects habitats, promotes biodiversity and creates incentives for ecotourism. Community patrols and certification processes ensure compliance with nature conservation and organic standards.
The use of coconut shells as biomass in Indonesia offers potential for waste reduction and sustainable energy. Activated carbon from shells is used to purify water, air, food and wastewater. Biochar, obtained through pyrolysis, is used as a soil conditioner in agriculture. Coconut pellets and briquettes offer an environmentally friendly alternative to fossil fuels, while the fibers can be used as insulation material in the construction industry. These approaches promote global sustainability goals.
Flender, the German manufacturer of drive technology and global market leader in the field of drive systems for wind energy, has had a partnership with the Indian company ArcVac Forge since 2009. ArcVac, with 300 employees near Kolkata, supplies steel and forged parts for wind power components. The company uses electric arc technology, which produces around a third less CO2 emissions than blast furnaces. This sustainable cooperation promotes the wind power industry and climate protection.
