Philippe Starck, born on January 18, 1949, in Paris, is one of the most influential designers of our time. Shaped early on by his father’s engineering work, he studied at the École Nissim de Camondo and founded his own studio in the 1970s. From early on, he developed the conviction that design must achieve more than mere aesthetics – it can take on social responsibility. Over the past decades, he has increasingly directed this conviction toward sustainability.
Today, Starck is among the designers who combine the idea of responsibility in design with a consistent commitment to sustainability. He works with reduced, minimalist, and durable forms, timeless concepts, innovative recyclable materials, and circular approaches. His designs – whether furniture, everyday objects, or architecture – show how intelligence, elegance, and sustainability can come together in a compelling design approach.
Starck became internationally known in 1983, when President François Mitterrand commissioned him to redesign private rooms in the Élysée Palace. Since then, he has shaped the design world with a distinctive language – bold and humorous, sentimental and sensuous, poetic and subversive.
His works have sparked global discussions, set new standards, and repeatedly challenged conventions. Iconic pieces such as the Juicy Salif lemon squeezer for Alessi, his furniture for Kartell, or his hotel and architectural projects are just some examples. Over the last two decades, he has increasingly intertwined this creative expression with ecological responsibility.
His work extends far beyond classic product design: in architecture, shipbuilding, and even space engineering, Starck has realized projects that merge sustainability with lightness and elegance. Today, he is regarded as one of the leading pioneers of a design philosophy that unites aesthetics and sustainability, thus setting benchmarks for transformation.
The German Sustainability Award Foundation honors Philippe Starck with the Honorary Award 2025 because he has not only provided inspiration for decades and shaped a unique creative language, but also transformed design into an instrument of sustainable change. With his global influence, he offers a guiding vision of how design can assume responsibility and accelerate the transition toward greater sustainability.
