Since its founding in 2007, the Social Fashion Company with the ARMEDANGELS label has made it its mission to revolutionise the highly controversial textile industry: Fair fashion instead of fast fashion, organic cotton instead of conventional cotton. The change from conventional to controlled, organic cotton cultivation is a 3-year process that constantly demands new know-how and cultivation techniques. Since many farmers in emerging and developing countries cannot manage this on their own, they often quickly give up trying to make the switch.
In spring 2018, the company took this as an opportunity to found the ARMEDANGELS Organic Farmers Association (AAOFA) together with its Indian partner Suminter India Organics: An ambitious and radical experiment in which, together with more than 500 small farmers in Gujarat, India, conventional cotton fields are gradually being converted into organic and regenerative fields. On a total of 704 hectares of land, 1036.97 tonnes of organic cotton have already been harvested in the third harvest season. The ecological results are impressive: biodiversity has increased, soil fertility has been enhanced and groundwater has been protected. In short, the climate crisis is counteracted by a higher carbon storage capacity of the soil.
In addition, the Social Fashion Company buys organic cotton directly from farmers who are part of AAOFA and pays them an organic premium. The income is thus predictable and ensures a livelihood, even during the COVID-19 pandemic.
ARMEDANGELS also works continuously on fair working conditions and a transparent supply chain. Today, ARMEDANGELS is not only certified according to the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) and the Global Recycled Standard (GRS), but has also been a member of the Fair Wear Foundation since 2015 and has been awarded Leader status.
The Social Fashion Company has grown strongly in recent years with its fashion label ARMEDANGELS and is now not only represented online, but also in many department stores. This confirms that the demand for sustainable fashion is continuously growing and has a great impact on a social level.
The jury selected the partnership between the Social Fashion Company and Suminter Organics as one of the finalists in the category "Global Corporate Partnerships 2022" of the German Sustainability Award.
