Municipal Partnerships

FAQs

General Information

We aim to shine a light on examples of particularly successful partnerships that promote the process of transformation toward a more sustainable lifestyle with our award for municipal partnerships. We hope to promote a broad public awareness for exemplary partnerships and showcase their good practices. In this respect, the project is intended to acknowledge and at the same time encourage municipalities to redouble their efforts to contribute to international development cooperation.

The award is sponsored by the Stiftung Deutscher Nachhaltigkeitspreis e.V. (National German Sustainability Award Foundation) in cooperation with the German federal government, municipal umbrella organisations, the German Council for Sustainable Development, business associations, civil society organisations and research institutions. The award for Municipal Partnerships is supported by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the Service Agency Communities in One World (SKEW) of Engagement Global.

Within the framework of the German Sustainability Award Municipal Partnerships, an award is presented to a German municipality and its partner municipality in the Global South.

The winners of the competition for municipal partnerships will receive € 60,000, which will be shared by the two partner municipalities. The prize money will be used for local development policy and the 2030 Agenda issues in the two partner municipalities. The winning municipalities will receive the award, a prize ball, which symbolizes the logo of the German Sustainability Award. The winners are stage guests at the award ceremony on 4 December 2020 at the MARITIM Hotel Düsseldorf. In addition, the Allianz für Entwicklung und Klima (Alliance for Development and Climate) offers consultation on making partnership work more climate-friendly.

The finalists of the competition for municipal partnerships each receive a certificate.

Seals will be made available to all nominees on request, with which their own success can be communicated internally and externally within the framework of the terms of use.

Application

All German cities, counties and municipalities are eligible to participate in the competition. They apply with a partnership, whereby the municipality in the Global South gives its approval and makes a statement on the cooperation. Only the previous year's winners of the German Sustainability Award for Municipal Partnerships cannot apply.

To participate in the competition for the German Sustainability Award for Municipal Partnerships, the municipalities must complete an online questionnaire. It collects the essential information about the partnership on the basis of key questions.

In the second phase of the competition, phone interviews will be conducted with the top candidates identified in the first round. Based on the information given in the questionnaire, the activities of the municipalities are examined in more detail and questions are asked for further details or clarification.

The competition phase I will take place between 15 September and 15 October 2020. During this period, the online questionnaire is available.
